MuseScore

Thank you Ruth for providing your computer so the group could be introduced to MuseScore. For anyone interested in using MuseScore, you will need to download the program from the internet. Just click on the link below.

In order to open up files sent from John, or others, you will need to unzip the files. This will require you to download and use the 7zip program. Just click on the link below. The .exe works for me.

When your file is unzipped, the file icon will look like this:

You can play the piece of music by clicking on the rewind button, then the play button.

You can alter tempo and volume under the Display button (Display.... Play Panel).

If you are not comfortable using computers, don't worry. Musical pieces will continue to be photocopied and distributed to the group; however, MuseScore can help you when practicing your music, and if you wish to transcribe or create a score, it allows you to do that as well. Under "help" is a regular program handbook, and there is an online handbook as well. It takes a little patience, but it can be a fun program to investigate. Give it a try!

We had a chance to visit with David at his home today, and took the opportunity to play some music for him. With David, and Jean keeping time, we played some new and old, familiar tunes. Then over a little snack, we had a chance to catch up on everyone's recent activities. 

Next Thursday, Feb 21st, we're back at St. Jude's Church. See you there!

Conducting

Each of us is giving conducting a try and it's a great learning experience. What is it they say ---"if you want to learn how to do something well, teach it"!

Other Recorder Ensembles/Organizations

It broadens the mind to look at how other ensembles or organizations are structured. Below are some links to other recorder groups -- one in London, Ontario and the other in Montreal, Quebec. Many recorder groups have the expectation their members will play more than one type of recorder. Should we?

Parkwood visit

Ros, Ruth and I had a chance to visit with David today (Jan 12, 2013). He remains at Parkwood and may stay another week or two, the verdict is still out concerning the date of his discharge. Once he is settled at home, he and Shanthi suggest we consider having some of the SLR Recorder Ensemble meetings at their house. We would need to car pool, since there is limited parking, but this would allow David to be present at our classes, while conserving his strength. Shanthi is working on arranging transportation services for David, to get him to St. Judes, when he is feeling up to it. David's sister is visiting this week, and said she will bring in David's soprano recorder, and the Yamaha and Orr book, so David can practice. We're sending good wishes your way David!

Wow! What a great class today. Eleven people in attendance. That must be a record. We have 3 new members: John, Judith, and Tony. We are so glad to have you join us; your experience and expertise are greatly appreciated. Welcome back Tom!

Susan and Joanne at the SLR Open House Jan 2013.

Susan and I played a few tunes while the registration process took place at the SLR Open House today. It was really fun to play some of the older sheet music we haven't touched for a while.
